Description

Graphite pencil on bristol 9 x 12 inch

Dolores Costello (September 17, 1903 – March 1, 1979) was an American film actress who achieved her greatest success during the era of silent movies. She was nicknamed "The Goddess of the Silent Screen". She was stepmother of John Barrymore's daughter Diana by his second wife Blanche Oelrichs, the mother of John Drew Barrymore and the grandmother of Drew Barrymore. Her film career was largely ruined by the destructive effects of early film makeup, which ravaged her complexion too severely to camouflage.

Hello Karen, this critique is being done on behalf of #Graphite-Gods as requested.

It's difficult to do a critique on a piece you can't find fault with, so the best I can do is add my comments.

She has such a sad, almost dejected look about her it makes you want to put your arms around her.

I usually waffle on about creating more contrast to add depth but this has everything it needs. You really get the sense of an early twentieth century photo slightly faded with age.
Added to this, the harsh lighting all adds to the aged feel as photography and lighting were still very much in their infancy.

I'm sorry I couldn't go into more depth on this as you have just done too gooder job on it.

Gary.
